How to Care for Your Jewellery

At Wolf and Zephyr, we wanted to create jewellery that was not just beautiful, but long lasting.

It is not simply good materials that make our jewellery special, but it is also the way you look after your jewellery that will make it last a long time, so follow our guide on how to care for your jewellery. We will answer some of your most common queries to keep your jewellery shining brilliantly. We have some good tips, so you know what to avoid as well.

How to Store Your Jewellery

Store your jewellery in a cool, dark, dry place that is out of harsh sunlight. This will also help prevent your jewellery from getting accidentally scratched by other pieces and as a plus, you won’t have to search for the other earring, or untangle your favourite bracelet in the mornings. If your jewellery has a gemstone, a pouch will also stop it from being knocked or scratched about. An old snap-shut glasses case is also great for storing jewellery as they often have a soft lining and can fit easily in a handbag or suitcase.

Oxidised Jewellery - How To Slow Down Oxidisation

Sterling silver jewellery will naturally become oxidised over time. Oxidation is caused when the alloys in sterling silver, such as copper, react with gases in the air. The reaction causes a thin layer of copper sulphide to form on the silver. The tarnish can look different in colour from yellow or brown to blueish black. It’s nothing to worry about and can easily be cleaned off.

We’ve got a few tips that will slow down the oxidisation process:
• Wear your jewellery regularly – we know you’ve already got that covered!
• Store your silver jewellery in a sealed plastic bag. This keeps the air out when you are not wearing it, alternatively a cool, dark and dry place will also be perfect.
• Clean your jewellery often.

How to Clean Your Jewellery

Our metals are recycled silver and gold vermeil. These can be easily cleaned without harsh chemicals. A polishing cloth or soft cloth will keep your jewellery looking luminous. We also think it better to use a soft cloth, like a muslin, rather than a paper towel. Paper towels might seem easy, but paper can scratch the metal.

If you want to sterilise your jewellery or give it a deep clean, we suggest using a mild washing up liquid with a little bit of warm water and a soft toothbrush. You don’t need to brush too vigorously, when it comes to cleaning your jewellery being gentle is key.

We suggest that you never put on or clean your jewellery over a basin – seeing your favourite earring going down the plughole is an experience to miss!! Clean in a small bowl or cup just to be on the safe side.

A silver cleaner can be used on Sterling silver pieces, but do not use this on vermeil. Although vermeil is made with a sterling silver base, silver cleaner can damage the thick gold plating.

Can I use hand sanitiser on my Jewellery?

Most harsh chemicals, including hand sanitisers may damage sterling silver and gold vermeil. This is the same for chemicals such as bleach, swimming pool chlorine, sun cream, perfumes, or hairspray. It’s best to remove any rings and bracelets before you wash your hands. Wash them for twenty seconds and wait till they are thoroughly dry before putting your jewellery back on. Your jewellery should be the final finishing touch.

If you follow these tips and tricks your jewellery will keep its shine and stay looking brilliant.
